Some would disagree with this post in that I classified HTTP as a session layer protocol. This is not a mistake, but might get you in trouble on a test. I would also classify SMTP as a session layer protocol. Many books and articles classify these as Application layer protocol. Beyond the defined characteristics of the session layer, these protocols transport ASCII or HTML which are classified as Presentation Layer. If information flows from the top of the Model to the bottem. These have to be somewhere between the Transport and the Presentation layers. Therefore, the Session Layer.
