About The Packet University

The Packet University was formed in 2008 by Paul Stewart.  The goal of the organization was and will always be to provide the resources necessary to allow people to learn complex technical concepts.  We feel that there is a missing aspect to most technical training.  This missing aspect is what is going on “on the wire”.

Many training organizations have excellent programs for teaching applications, operating systems and configuration.  While this is good, all products have different methods for logging and troubleshooting.  Additionally, most applications rely on networks to transmit and retrieve data.  This product oriented method of teaching leads to a "point and click" method of troubleshooting and hides the true characteristics of many applications as they relate to the network.  We believe this leads to engineers who may well understand a specific product or products, but not understand the underlying architecture that allows them to operate.

In a perfect world, this would be enough.  Multiple people could collaborate to implement solutions and resolve problems.  However, as technical engineers, we do not live in a perfect world.  In many cases we need to investigate that behavior of our product, solution or application.  In many cases we are working with other engineers with other specialties.  When problems arise, it is very easy to get into contentious situations with parties faulting one another for the difficulty at hand.

The Packet University has a different philosophy.  We believe that there are many valid reasons to learn networking from the bottom of the OSI model up.  While this is especially true for network engineers, our methods are also beneficial to software engineers as well.  Our methods are not meant to replace traditional application and product training, but to complete the understanding.  We believe that by breaking communication into its simplest components and building on the knowledge gained that can provide much richer overall understanding.

Our exciting “from the wire” approach to training will provide invaluable unique insight to those seeking knowledge.  The type of knowledge gleaned from our materials will prove an important basis for an ongoing growth in technical knowledge.  So whether you are a software engineer, a security expert or a network engineer, The Packet University welcomes and encourages you to visit often.
