PacketCast 1 -- Routing Loops |
We are very excited to inform you that our first PacketCast is going live. The topic of this discussion is routing loops and the IP Time to Live field. In this talk we build a lab of three routers and forcefully inject network loops. We look at different ways to detect routing loops, even in the case that we don’t have access to the network or network equipment in which the packets are looping.
We also look at another very common use of the TTL field that nearly every network engineer has employed even if they don’t realize it. The concepts presented are fairly straightforward, although they may not always be understood or just not realized. However, since IP is protocol for the internet and these are some of the building block concepts for IP, we think it is a worthwhile topic. PacketCasts are short instructional screencasts that are meant to further the knowledge and understanding of protocols. These are not meant teach specific vendors or products such as Cisco, Linux or Microsoft, but to provide bottom up knowledge of networking in a way that can be applied to practically all solutions. It is our goal to provide a monthly PacketCast to be released on the first Friday of every month. We would appreciate ideas and comments. Additionally, if you have content to offer, we would be very interested to hear from you as well.
