PacketCast 3 -- Path MTU Discovery |
Path MTU discovery is an often misunderstood aspect of networking. As we begin to really tighten the security of our networks, we must understand this process in order leave the network fully functional. Additionally, we may often come upon a situation where a network seems to work, but there are issues accessing a site. In any case, the Path MTU Discovery process is important to understand.
This PacketCast describes in depth the Path MTU Discovery process. We utilize real world applicataions to generate traffic that utilize this process and we manipulate the settings by using logical IP MTU constraints in our Cisco routers. In this discussion, I compare and contrast the normal operation to the broken netwark and analyze the packets using Wireshark. Additionally, I use my lab to demonstrate the operation of the MTU Discovery Process and scenarios that are particularly prone to issues.
We continue to strive to improve these discussions. While this is a longer Packet Cast, I intend to keep them in the fifteen to twenty minute time range in the future. We do appreciate any positive or critical feedback that we can use to improve these in the future. Additionally, we appreciate you linking to our site and spreading the word. So please check back often to see what we are doing at The Packet University.
