It has been painfully obvious to anyone who has been following this site that new posts have been few and far between. In the beginning I had an idea of what I wanted this site to be. Unfortunately, I grossly underestimated the effort that was going to be necessary to get it up and keep it going. My desire was that this site becomes a resource where aspiring technicians and engineers can pick up a little bit of knowledge. I still have a strong desire to help people understand how things work, specifically protocols.
Since The Packet University is a sideline, my day job as a Network Engineer of Lexnet, my family and church take precedence. Additionally, I have begun the process of pursuing my CCIE Security Certification. My original intent for this site was to discuss and teach protocols from the perspective of the wire. I find this type of research very enjoyable and fulfilling. However, as a result of my aforementioned obligations and time constraints, I have two options with this site. First, I could simply turn the site off or discontinue publishing until time permits me to do it again. A second option is as follows. I could deviate from the original idea of the site in order to bring my content more in line with what I am doing professionally and in my studies. This latter option is definitely the more appealing one to me. Quite frankly, that is the only option that I have considered. On a go forward basis, I plan to make some minor changes in delivery. The first thing is that there will probably be very little if any video. The video content is time consuming to produce and overall I am not completely satisfied with it. I do not want to totally abandon the original idea of PacketCasts, but they will be on hold for some period of time. Personally, I am far more likely to read through a blog entry than to take the time to watch a video. This is true even though I am a relgular viewer of a few video podcasts that are delivered through iTunes and RSS. I assume that many others also prefer traditional blogs to video content. The content that you can expect to see here will be one to two page entries that map to the CCIE Security Exam. On occasion, I may blog about some other technical aspect that somehow relates to IT Security that I find interesting or strange enough to post about. On a very rare occasion, I may post on something that is technical but not security related. On a go forward basis, this site is simply going to be a reflection of what I am doing professionally in my technical and security endeavors. I do apologize to anyone who was hoping to learn more about protocol analysis. To them, I would suggest taking a looking at sample captures and using Wireshark every time the opportunity presents itself. To those who are interested in Network Security, or are pursuing the CCIE Security, I would encourage them to check back often, or sign up for the RSS feed of the front page.
